Understanding Health Insurance

Health insurance is a major issue for most households and companies in the United States, and the problem is growing. As many as 16% of Americans lack coverage, and medical bills are at fault for pushing many families into financial ruin. As such, it is very important to understand exactly how health insurance works and how to get the best coverage available for the amount of money you can spend.

If you are employed, you will most likely receive insurance through your employer. Employers, however, are not required to provide any kind of insurance for their employees. If an employer does provide a plan, they will most likely have a variety of options that you can pursue with different payment levels.

To provide for the health of your entire family, however, it may be necessary to take out a family health insurance plan. Most employer plans are only going to cover the employee and not the entire family of the employee. For that kind of coverage, you will usually have to look elsewhere. Covering the entire family with one comprehensive health insurance plan is usually going to be cheaper than taking out individual plans for each member of the family.

When looking for a family health insurance plan, you will have to decide whether you want a plan that covers just medical needs, or if you'd like to have a health insurance plan that provides comprehensive coverage for needs such as dental or optical. A basic medical plan will cover major medical or emergency needs, but it will usually fail to cover any kind of elective medical procedures. A comprehensive plan will cover such needs as dental, optical, aural, and provide benefits for prescriptions and hospital care.

Many plans will fall somewhere between the basic medical and the comprehensive end of the spectrum. As the benefits increase, the cost of the plan is also going to rise. Finding the right plan for you and your family is a balancing act between what you can afford and what medical needs you can foresee arising.

Health insurance policies can often be very complicated in what they offer for a family. Whenever a health insurance plan is bought without going through any large group such as a company, the health insurance company is going to require that medical exams be given. It is possible that the insurer will grant a health insurance plan even if some members of the family have serious medical conditions. Be very careful, however, that you are aware of any stipulations in the plan. The plan may have been granted expressly because the insurer made a family member's condition an exclusion in their policy.

When shopping for insurance, it is very important to get as many quotes on different plans as possible. If you find a reasonable quote for a plan that might suit your family, research the plan closely to get a feel for all the details, such as any preferred provider stipulations or exclusion policies that might be in place. Also be sure to double check a provider with the Better Business Bureau to ensure that the provider hasn't had a history of complaints against it.

If you happen to be self-employed, there are also options for you. Some self-employed fields have group associations that you can join to gain health insurance, although these plans are usually not very comprehensive. As a self-employed individual, you might also be eligible to use your health insurance as a deduction on your taxes. Another possible idea is to start what is known as a health savings account, or HSA. An HSA allows you to set aside money for health insurance and medical purposes while also allowing you to bypass taxes on that money.

With some careful research, you can find a health insurance plan to suit your own needs, or those of your family. Finding the right health insurance is a balancing act between satisfying basic needs and providing for the future. Be sure to choose a health insurance plan that your family can support, while also ensuring that you and your family are adequately protected for future needs. Invest the time necessary to find the best health insurance plan so that you can rest easy.
